Rock mining and drilling bits and equipment
The Economic Development Partnership of Alabama Foundation has selected 11 teams to compete in the 2015 Alabama Launchpad Startups Competition, including seven from Birmingham.
The teams will be competing for a share of $250,000 in funding and will be pitching their businesses to a panel of five judges at 9 a.m. on Jan. 23 at Evonik Industries. The event is free and open to the public.
Here are the seven Birmingham startups set to compete in the latest round of the Launchpad, which has been expanded several times in recent years:
Abel Healthcare Enterprises: Affiliated with UAB and has a product, SendMedicalImages.com, which offers cloud-based medical image transfer and viewing options, creating easier access to medical images, minimizing wasted resources, saving lives, and making life better for doctors, patients, and health care facilities.
Bama Mine and Milling: The company, in partnership with the University of Alabama at Birmingham, is using patented, UAB Research Foundation-owned nanonstructured diamond coatings and proprietary processes for rock mining and drilling bits and equipment, which produces tools with a higher performance to cost ratio than traditional carbide without the need for new training.
